Divorce & Family Investigations
Focused divorce and family inquiries to help you and your lawyer understand the facts.
Support for a difficult decision
Give Your Family Matter a Clear Factual Starting Point
Divorce and family investigations can help clarify specific concerns during a separation or parenting dispute. Perhaps an account of events conflicts with what you know. You may also need to check a property connection, locate a person or document relevant activity.
At Facts Investigations, we begin with the question that needs an answer. Then we assess whether focused inquiries could help. If you have a lawyer, their guidance can keep the work tied to the issues that matter.
Choose work that answers a useful question
Where Divorce and Family Investigations May Help
These are examples of concerns we can discuss, subject to the circumstances and lawful access to information.
Parenting & Child Welfare
A specific concern about supervision or a parenting exchange may need a factual record. We discuss appropriate observations with the child’s welfare in mind. A clear record of relevant events can help your lawyer review the concern.
Property & Business Connections
Relevant records may help check a property interest or business connection. We can compare verified information with the details you lawfully hold. Your lawyer can then consider whether further financial disclosure is needed.
Relevant Background Inquiries
A family matter may raise a specific question about an adult’s identity or background. Research must have a legitimate purpose and use appropriate sources. We explain which records and sources could help answer your question.
Locations & Contact Details
An out-of-date address can delay a legal step. Where there is a proper basis for the request, we can discuss locating an adult or verifying an address. Our skip tracing service explains this work.
Events & Witness Accounts
Dates, statements and photographs may tell different parts of an incident. We review relevant material and discuss suitable witness inquiries. In addition, a clear timeline can show where accounts agree and where more information is needed.
Personal Privacy Concerns
If you suspect unwanted observation, describe the events that caused concern. We can discuss whether a review or counter-surveillance inquiry is appropriate. Tell us about any current court orders so the proposed work takes them into account.
For concerns centred on a partner’s fidelity, see our cheating spouse investigations. This page focuses on factual support for separation and family matters.
Proportionate work with a clear purpose
Our Approach to Divorce and Family Inquiries
We select methods around the question and the available information. As a result, the plan may involve research, fieldwork or a combination of both.
Observations in Context
Where suitable, surveillance can record relevant activity from lawful locations. Notes, photographs or video may document events during agreed coverage. We explain gaps in visibility and avoid treating a brief observation as the whole story.
Records & Background Research
We examine relevant public sources and material you are authorized to provide. Next, we check names, dates and connections before reporting a match.
Witness & Information Review
Appropriate interviews can clarify what a witness personally saw or heard. We distinguish that account from opinion or information passed on by others. The planned work must also respect any restrictions affecting contact.
For a defined financial question, explore asset location inquiries. Private account information requires proper authorization or a legal disclosure process.
Make informed choices before committing
Plan Around the Issue, Budget and Deadline
Divorce and family matters can involve several concerns at once. Setting priorities helps direct the work toward the questions that are most useful to resolve.
Identify the Missing Fact
First, explain the concern and provide relevant dates, names and documents. Include any legal deadlines or restrictions. We can coordinate with your lawyer when you authorize that contact.
Agree on Scope & Contact
Next, we discuss useful inquiries, likely timing, fees and expenses. We also agree on how to reach you discreetly.
Review Findings & Gaps
Finally, we bring the findings together and explain how they relate to your questions. You and your adviser can decide whether further inquiries have a useful purpose. The aim is to give you useful information for the decisions ahead.
Clear findings for your next step
A Record You Can Review With Your Lawyer
Divorce and family investigations should produce a clear account of the agreed work. We separate observed events, source material and unresolved questions.
Factual Support for Legal Advice
Your lawyer advises on legal relevance and next steps. Courts decide whether to accept material and what weight to give it. Our role is to document findings, not to promise a parenting or financial outcome.
Dates, Events & Sources
A record of relevant observations and research, with enough context to understand what was checked.
Available Supporting Material
Relevant photographs, video, records or witness information gathered lawfully within the assignment.
Unanswered Questions
Relevant context and any follow-up that could help answer an outstanding question.

Common Questions About Divorce and Family Investigations
Find answers about planning, costs and working with your family lawyer. Select a question to open its answer.
What can divorce and family investigations establish?
They can help verify relevant events, records or connections within an agreed scope. For example, research may clarify a property link or confirm an address. We focus on the facts that matter to your instructions and present the findings clearly for you and your adviser.
How can an investigation help with a parenting concern?
We can document relevant events and observations for your family lawyer to review. Under the Divorce Act, parenting decisions centre on the child’s best interests. Justice Canada explains this in its guidance on children’s best interests. Your family lawyer can identify which facts may be relevant.
Should I wait for an investigator if a child may be unsafe?
No. A private investigation is not an emergency response or a child protection service. Ontario directs people to report suspected child abuse or neglect to a children’s aid society. If someone faces immediate danger, contact police. See Ontario’s child protection reporting guidance.
Can the findings help me prepare for a separation?
The findings may clarify facts for your family lawyer. Evidence of an affair alone does not determine a financial or parenting outcome. The legal importance of a fact depends on the issue. Before commissioning work for a legal purpose, ask your lawyer what information would help address that issue.
Can you obtain hidden bank balances or private messages?
Access to private accounts requires proper authorization or a legal disclosure process. We can discuss suitable records research and material you lawfully hold. Your lawyer can advise whether a legal process is needed for information that is not available to us.
Can you work directly with my family lawyer?
Yes, with your authorization we can discuss the factual questions, relevant deadlines and reporting needs. Clear instructions help avoid work that adds little value. Let us know about existing proceedings and any orders that may affect the assignment.
How much does the work cost, and what should I prepare?
Start with a short timeline and the question you want answered. Include relevant names, locations and information you have authority to share. Also tell us how we may contact you. Rates typically range from $75-$150+ per hour, depending on the scope and complexity, plus any applicable expenses needed to carry out the assignment. We explain the proposed budget and any retainer before you proceed.
Can my lawyer use the report in court?
Your lawyer can assess how the report may support the case. The court determines whether it accepts the material and the weight it carries. We provide clear documentation of the agreed work. Your lawyer can explain how findings may be used and whether witness attendance is needed.
